UML had its beginnings in 1974, starting life as a hobby shop. The original UML hobby shop featured an extensive range of plastic kit sets from all over the globe, and was a real hit with modelers in Hong Kong. It gained instant popularity because of its exciting and broad selection of models. Building on the initial success of this shop, UML was able to expand into the wholesale arena. From 1976 onwards, it became the exclusive distributor for various model kit manufacturers in the Hong Kong market, and it was also wholesaling to other local hobby and toy shops.

This wholesale component of the business continued to expand to such an enormous extent that in 1979, the existence of a separate wholesale company was necessary. Hobby World Ltd. was consequently formed to meet this need, and it was responsible for handling more and more wholesale accounts. Meanwhile UML's focus remained on the import and export sides of the business.

UML was importing many model-related products, and to capitalize on consumer interest, a modeling magazine called "Detail Modelling" was published. This magazine served as a tool to promote and advertise the products that UML was importing, and the first issue was published in 1980. This publishing venture was organized under a new sister company called Concord Publications Company. Concord is currently one of the leading publishers in defense and military books.

A large model show and competition was held in 1981 at Hong Kong's City Hall, wholly organized by UML. This show was a huge success, gaining a high patronage and much publicity with the help and cooperation of the TV media. This event further cemented UML's premier position in the Hong Kong hobby scene. It was also at this time that UML launched "Gundam" onto the Hong Kong stage, a product line that has remained immensely popular right down to the present time. Subsequently in 1982, UML introduced the Japanese sensation "Macross" to the Hong Kong market.

After its success in the Hong Kong market, UML proceeded to open subsidiary companies in both the USA and Canada in 1984. The purpose of these subsidiaries was to wholesale kits throughout North America, a large and well-established model market. One of the foremost milestones in UML's evolution occurred in 1987. In this year another sister company, Dragon Models Limited was formed, a company tasked with designing and manufacturing its very own plastic model kits. These kits quickly attracted worldwide attention owing to their quality and diverse range of products. Since then the Dragon Models name has gained for itself an enviable reputation, synonymous with quality and accuracy in scale model kits.

With the ongoing reformation and opening up of Mainland China to the outside world, business activity in areas such as Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangdong provinces has increased tremendously. UML foresaw a vast consumer market in China as a byproduct of the nation's meteoric economic growth, and also perceived an opportunity to take advantage of Hong Kong's close proximity to Mainland China. Therefore in 1994, UML set up a production facility in Shanghai, to manufacture Dragon products and to market them throughout China.
